I’m a historian of nineteenth-century U.S. politics 和 经济s, with particular interest in agriculture, energy 和 development. The most up-to-date information about my work can usually be found 在我的个人网站上.

我的第一本书, Grassroots Leviathan: Nor的rn Agricultural Reform in 的 Slaveholding Republic, came out in 2020 with Johns Hopkins University Press 和 won best-book awards from 的 Agricultural 历史 Society 和 的 Center for Civil War 研究. 发布者信息为 在这里. A general audience review is 在这里.

I'm currently working on a book for Norton tentatively called King Hay: The Equine Energy Regime in America, 1800-1950. It tells 的 story of how literal horse power formed an indispensable linchpin of 的 industrial energy system that carried 的 United States into 的 carbon age. During 的 nineteenth century, coal 和 o的r fossil fuels transformed America 和 的 world, initiating an unprecedented era of rapid 和 sustained 经济 growth. Counterintuitively, this momentous development also brought a new age of 的 horse. 从1840年到1910年 period of mass immigration to 的 country—的 national horse population grew faster than 的 human population. 马变大了, 太, as heavier breeds were introduced to provide traction for everything from short-haul transportation to agricultural mechanization. Importantly, keeping horses at work meant growing 和 distributing immense quantities of fodder. 这就解释了为什么, 在整个19世纪, American hay production was of comparable value to American cotton, one of 的 era's most important—和 iconic—industrial raw materials. Yet while cotton 和 o的r global agricultural commodities, 比如小麦, have been studied extensively, virtually no attention has been given to 的 distinctive economy tasked with fueling 的 era's irreplaceable prime mover. A look at 的 extensive operations of 的 equine energy regime t在这里fore promises to reveal a great deal about 的 spatial, 经济, political 和 social dynamics of industrial society in 的 period before roughly 1950.

I’ve held fellowships at 的 Library Company of Philadelphia, Yale University’s Center for 的 Study of Representative Institutions, Cornell University’s Society for 的 Humanities, 和, 最近, at 的 Library of Congress’s Kluge Center.

I also occasionally serve as a Senior Policy Advisor for 的 Good Food Institute, 一个非营利组织, nonpartisan organization working toward a viable protein future.
