Academic Petitions are requests by a student for an exception to an academic policy. The petitions below relate to academic policies regarding SMU's 普通的课程 要求s.

The Office of General Education facilitates petitions related to SMU's General Education and Graduation Requirements. We strongly recommend that you work with your academic advisor to complete the petition form successfully.

Some best practices when completing your petitions include selecting the appropriate petition form, reading every prompt thoroughly, writing out detailed paragraphs 为 prompt questions, obtaining a course syllabus versus a course description. 学生s can receive additional help when filling out their petitions by attending 办公时间  offered by the Office of General Education.

Once submitted, please allow up to two weeks for a decision. Decision timelines vary based on the number of reviewers.

After a petition is approved, please allow 2 - 5 business days 为 approval to be reflected in my.SMU on your Degree Progress Report.

Pre-Approval of 转移信用

These petitions enable students to request approval before taking courses at a different 4-一年 institute. These forms are to be used by SMU students on the 普通的课程 after matriculation to SMU.

Please determine which Pre-Approval of 转移信用s best suits your academic needs.

Pre-Approval from an SMU Abroad Program

This petition enables 普通的课程 students to request approval for Breadth credit before taking courses through an SMU Abroad program.

External Credit Breadth Requirement Swap

SMU 通识课程(CC) students on the Fall 2023 catalog or after may satisfy up to three Breadth 要求s using external credit. External credit is test, dual, concurrent, or transfer credit.

External credit is test, dual, concurrent, or transfer credit. Suppose a student possesses pre-matriculation external credit for more than three Breadth 要求s. 在这种情况下, a student may want to substitute one 的 three satisfied Breadth 要求s that were applied during admission processing for a different Breadth 要求.

External Credit Swap Petition

普通的课程 students may request credit for transfer courses, 个人活动, or experiences 完成 after high school 毕业 be considered for fulfillment of 毕业 要求s.

普通的课程 students are strongly recommended to request pre-approval for transfer courses or experiences that will be 完成 after high school 毕业 and prior to enrollment at SMU in order to be considered for fulfillment of Graduation Requirements.

Depending on how the Proficiency and Experience will be fulfilled, different documentation will be required. Gather these items before entering the forms platform:

Transfer (Non-SMU) Course: Be prepared to provide with your petition - 

  1. 一份支持性声明， using the provided PE 支持 skills template, that clearly explains how the course will meet the 学生 学习的结果, 支持技能, 课程标准 为 requested 毕业 要求.
  2. 电流, complete syllabus that includes the name 的 教练, 课程的标题, 课程表, 指定阅读资料, 作业, 等级划分.

个人活动: Use this option to propose an 个人 活动 计划. Please upload the following:

  1. 一份支持性声明， using the provided PE 支持 skills template, that clearly explains how the 个人 活动 will meet the 学生 学习的结果, 支持技能, 经验的标准 为 requested 毕业 要求.
Proficiency Experience Pre-Approval Petition

 






普通的课程 students may request credit for transfer courses or experiences 完成 after high school 毕业 and prior to enrollment at SMU be considered for fulfillment of Graduation Requirements.

Depending on how the Proficiency and Experience was fulfilled, different documentation is required. Gather these items before entering the forms platform.

个人活动 (pre or post matriculation to SMU):

  1. 一个总结 的 个人 活动 完成. 

  2. A 支持 声明, using the provided PE 支持 skills template, that clearly explains how the 活动 met the 学习的结果, 支持技能, 经验的标准 对于需求. 

  3. Independent verification that you have 完成 the experience. May include letters from supervisors, 组织顾问, screen shot of volunteer hour-tracking platform, 等.

  4. Written反射 meeting prompt criteria (lengths, questions, 等.) or work 完成 for this 要求. Visit the PE’s webpage for reflection prompt and length 要求s.

Pre-Approved Programs or Organizations: 

  1. Provide required materials as specified by your pre-approved program or organization. Contact the program advisor for additional details if you are unsure. 例如:

  1. Engage Dallas: A screenshot 的 Canvas Course showing all submitted 作业. 

  1. Mustang Heroes: Your experience reflection meeting the word length and addressing prompts.

国际学生

We understand and support international students whose visa statuses need to be considered when fulfilling 普通的课程 要求s. These petitions are for international students requesting advance approval of general education 要求s. These petitions should only be used by students after matriculation to SMU.

Determine which 的 three petitions you need to complete, based on if you are requesting: (1) free-elective credit, (2) departmental credit toward majors/minors, (3) to fulfill a 普通的课程 Breath 要求.
